What is fair?

May 28, 2010 – 12:12 pm

To those ruled by envy or greed, economic “fair” means little or nothing from themselves and as much as possible from others.  Here is what fair means.  To me it means equitable and just when the context is economic.

Hillary Clinton believes that “The rich are not paying their fair share“.  She must not recognize that lower taxes historically increase revenues to the Government.  This isn’t about economic reality though.  Its about what is “fair”.

The U.S. uses a “progressive” income tax system.  It also taxes “luxury” items pretty heavily.  It also loves to tax “sin” items such as hydrocarbon products, tobacco, alcohol etc.

There are problems with subjective use of words when discussing this.  First, what is “fair” (equitable, just) in terms of paying the government?  Second who are “The Rich” and who exactly determines what is “rich”?

It is common knowledge for non-sheople that the highest earners pay MORE than the lions share of income taxes already.  Here are the percentages of income taxes paid by income earners.  Meanwhile over 40 percent of people (citizens, aliens or any other working age person) pay NO TAXES at all.

Now what exactly is “fair” about that?  Further, to buy any “luxury” item would require sufficient wealth.  So non-rich folks aren’t buying or aren’t buying as much, therefore paying less of those taxes.  Now the “sin” taxes hit all folks (who smoke, drink, drive etc) more equitably it seems.

Fair income taxation would be an equal percentage to ALL income.  Sorry no deductions as those aren’t fair to all equally.  If a poor person makes 10 grand and is taxed at 10% and the less poor guy makes 100 grand and is taxed at 10% the less poor guy is paying TEN TIMES AS MUCH (fair?) in taxes as the poor guy.  They are taxed equitably however.  That is just and fair to both equally.  So why do collectivists hate such fairness?

You could eliminate (repeal the 16th amendment) the income tax all together.  That would be fair to all equally.  Of course those who consume tax dollars (services, goods and programs from government) while not paying any income tax might think it unfair.  But that would be due to greed and/or envy.  Who wants their freebies to dry up?

If you eliminate the income tax and replace it with a VAT or National Sales Tax you should exclude non-packaged food staples I think.  People can control themselves what they pay in taxes buy what they choose to buy or not buy.  What could be more fair than that?

Those who value liberty and American Freedom should NEVER allow their congress-critters to pass a VAT/NST without REPEAL of the 16th amendment.

Its funny to hear ANYONE complain that those who pay 80% or more of the national bills aren’t “paying their fair share.  Those who do are nothing but greedy, envious (or both) or trying to increase government power over the people.
