“National Emergency” My A**
October 24, 2009 – 6:20 pmRemember, “stroke of the pen, law of the land. Kinds cool”? That was a Clinton White House-era staffer’s commentary on the issuance of executive orders, a power much abused by Presidents of both parties for a generation or more. Declaring ‘national emergencies’ is another way to exercise dictatorial powers without having to actually let fall the veil of hypocrisy. President Obama has done just this with the so-called ‘swine flu pandemic.’
As you can see, he’s empowered his Administration to take whatever actions they feel like, all for our own good, I’m sure. In a free country, people would take to the streets in protest over such an intimate abuse of power. Perhaps the couch-potato version of street demonstrations would work better in the America we now inhabit – everyone take to the couch – stay home, take a few days off, call in ‘sick’ – sick of government’s proto-dictatorship, nannying and general intrusion where they are neither needed nor welcome. Shutting down as much economic activity as possible for a week might get the message through to the masters of this nation that their abuises of power carry unpleasant and unintended consequences. Perhaps the loss of tax revenue and the general paralysis of commerce would not deter them. Perhaps it would. We’ll only know if the Silent Majority decides that it’s time to make themselves heard.
