Swine Flu Shots: Learning From History

August 15, 2009 – 7:03 pm

I was in high school in 1976, during the last swine flu panic. The vaccination program was a fiasco. (President Ford at least practiced what he preached, taking a shot himself at a public ceremony.) The (London) Daily Mail reports that the British (whose health care system we’re supposed to admire) believe that the vaccine is linked to a rare neurological disorder. They also report that the vaccine accounted for more deaths than did the swine flu, last time around. That is not to say that this is a repeat of what happened in 1976, only that extreme caution should be used before encouraging the public to accept the vaccine, and its’ use should not be mandatory. (I won’t take a shot even if it means losing my job. No one tells me what goes into my body, or the bodies of my children.)

Governments are prone to their own contagious disease – Public Policy Panic Disorder. It is up to us to administer the corrective, by doing all we can to ensure that due deliberation occurs, and that the risks are fully understood and explained, before embarking on a vaccination program. Finally, ‘research’ from paid sources or from drug makers should be considered suspect unless independently verified. There is a Pharma-Industrial-Complex every bit as much as there is President Eisenhower’s more famous Military-Industrial- Complex. Beware them.

  2. I agree.

I remember the swine flu scare of the 70’s as well, and have read similar reports.

The development of drugs is a huge business, and like any for profit venture, does not always have the well being of the consumer as its primary focus. This industry is an example of an industry that needs to be strictly regulated to better control the costs of drugs and the reduce potential for abuse in the name of the almighty dollar.

Guardisil is another drug that is being pushed by the Pharma-Industrial-Complex. I have a teen daughter, and have been wrestling with whether or not this is a warranted risk. HPV is a concern in today’s world, but that has to be balanced by:

    • Educating our children on the risks of pre marital sex.
    • Instilling the morality required to abstain from promiscuous behavior that will put them at risk.
    • And the unknown long term effects of the use of this drug.
