Letter to Congress about HR 2454

May 24, 2009 – 11:33 am

     Many thanks to the folks at the SoCal Tax Revolt Coalition for doing the research that made what follows possible:

Dear Congressman Schauer:
     Greetings.  I am writing to express my alarm about one of the most foolish pieces of utopian nonsense to ever come before Congress, in my lifetime.  A job-killer bill that serves to feed the vanity of ‘climate change’ fanatics, without the scientific consensus to support it, is a recipe for deepening and prolonging the depression we are in, with those least able to bear the new burdens imposed by this bill suffering from it the most.

HR 2454, according to the Heritage Foundation, will produce the following negative consequences:
Reduce aggregate gross GDP by $9.6 trillion;

Destroy 1,105,000 jobs per year on average, with peak years seeing unemployment rise by over 2,479,000 jobs;

Increase the average per-family-of-four costs by $4,800 per year;

Raise electricity rates 90 percent;

Raise gasoline prices by 74 percent;

Raise residential natural gas prices by 55 percent; and

Increase inflation-adjusted federal debt by 26 percent, or $29,150 additional federal debt per person, again after adjusting for inflation.

    Given the above, unless there are compelling, factual counter-arguments, this 900-page bill that few, id any, Members of Congress have read, should be defeated.  Further, rep. Waxman is an extremist, and should be summarily removed from the chairmanship of the House Energy Committee.  Rep. Dingell would never have permitted this dagger, aimed at the heart of what remains of Michigan’s manufacturing base, to see the light of day.

     Therefore, I urge you to treat this as a litmus test item, and to not only vote against it, but to urge others to do so, as well.  I hope and pray that you will not be too late.

    Move over, Pol Pot, Waxman may destroy a civilization greater than that which you murdered.
