The push to become the European States of America continues.  A bill has been introduced to “require” that employers give their employees paid vacation.  Gussied up with a lame claim that it will ensure employee retention and enhance their productivity it is a Euro-program done small.  What it will do is drive small businesses out of business or into business models that require fewer employees.

Living in Europe (unemployment rates average above 10% there) for 7 years I was amazed at their government dictated “benefits”.  6 weeks of paid vacations, 35-36 hour work weeks, maternity (paid) leaves of up to a year.

Benefits should be chosen by businesses.  Those that want to attract and retain top talent will structure their pay and benefits to do so.  Where exactly in the Constitution is the Federal Behemoth empowered to mandate the pay and benefits offered by private employers?
