EIT or Not
May 19, 2009 – 10:15 amMychael Massie contends that “EIT” (enhanced interrogation techniques) aren’t “enhanced” at all but are normal. Not just normal but that which SHOULD be used. To pursue this argument he compares the interrogations severity to the beheadings conducted by terrorists. This is a fallacious comparison in the context of civilized behavior though.
The United States should always exhibit a higher standard. This doesn’t mean we all agree on what is acceptable in interrogations, or what “torture” is.
I think Mr. Massie errs on the side of lack of distinction. While stimulus (light, noise, temperature) doesn’t constitute torture by its definition, simulating drowning probably does.
What use is safety is we allow our civilizational standards to be corrupted?
