Sad News: GIVE-away passes Senate
March 26, 2009 – 8:16 pmI have sad news for our liberty-loving readers: The US Senate passed its Version of GIVE (i.e., Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act) legislation. You can still contact our dear senators HERE to thank them. You may want to give a special shout-out to Senator John McCain, who voted “Aye”, along with 79 other representatives (Voting Record HERE, for those of you who want to determine how genuine the “thanks” will be; I am from California — the state that may ban back cars in the name of environmental protection; I plan to berate mine most vigorously).
I don’t know what is the most irksome about GIVE-away: The $6 billion price tag expand government-funded national service efforts during a money-tight period or expanding inefficient bureaucracy that inhibits sound charitable efforts. Just to give you idea, Senator Judd Gregg indicated that the USA would not qualify for EU membership because of the US Debt level. The only good news is that or compulsory volunteerism requirements that forces our young people into quasi-military servitude in “approved” causes at the discretion of politicians was cut from the Senate version, for which we should be thankful (I guess).
While your sending your thanks, you may want to complain about the “Newspaper Revitalization Act” that ensures there will be an American leftist propoganda sheet the equivalent of the USSR’s Pravda. You may want to give Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, the author of this chestnut, a special note.
As always, I offer a “Side of Hope”. Firstly, after the AIG bru-ha-ha, private firms are not inclined to “partner” with government (rather like a mouse being asked to partner with a hungry cat, but I digress). Also, The National Tea Party organization indicates over 300 cities will participate in the Tax Day events.
A little local news: The San Diego Tax Day Tea Party plans have been finalized. They are currently slated for 6:00 pm to midnight near San Diego area Post Offices open late for taxpayers. The postal locations are as follows:
1) Sports Arena Midway: 2535 Midway, San Diego
2) El Cajon: 401 W. Lexington Ave., El Cajon
3) North County: 11251 Rancho Carmel Dr., San Diego
4) Escondido: 403 N. Escondido Blvd. Escondido (5 PM to close)
There will also be an Oceanside event on that date 6:00-7:00 pm by the Oceanside City Hall (300 N. Coast Highway). Protesters will march from the Civic Center to the pier at 6:45 PM. More details are at the Southern California Tax Revolt Coalition website.
