Praise Where Praise Is Due

March 18, 2009 – 6:50 pm

Attorney General Holder is relaxing marijuana prosecution rules, which is good news.  The War on Drugs is a manifest failure, and our prisons are filled with too many people whose only crime is the sale or local distribution of a bad habit-forming substance to other adults.  No nation that calls itself free should have over 1% of its’ adult population behind bars, in addition to an equal number on probation or parole.  (Selling to kids is quite another matter, and increasing penalties in this area would meet with no opposition from this writer.)
It’s been a rare thing for the Obama administration to act rightly; in this they did, and thus this praise.
