Do Newspapers Matter?

March 29, 2009 – 10:20 am

Nolan Finley of the Detroit News tries to make a case that Newspapers Still Matter.  I would put forth that newspapers CAN still matter but I also understand why most do not.

Mr. Finley’s argument is based on a common, leftist premise of; “institutions both public and private need an independent monitor to keep them honest.”  He follows up with; “If it’s not newspapers doing the job, who will?”

The fallacies are:

  1. Most newspapers aren’t an “independent monitor”, rather they parrot the worldview of the political left (collectivist) nearly exclusively.  That’s why they are failing.  Thinking people recognize this.
  2. The newspapers are, generally, only interested in keeping “institutions” that aren’t *progressive* or *liberal* “honest”.  That “honest” of course meaning adherence to collectivist ideologies.
  3. Finally he seems to believe that Newspapers actually DO the job he claims them to do.  Keeping “Institutions honest” that is.  The reason newspapers are failing is precisely because they DON’T.

Thinking people see the plethora of editorializing via alleged *news* stories in newspapers.  They see the constant parroting of Demoncrat and Liberal social and political ideology.  They see how out of touch with regular Americans the newspapers are.

As to “who will do the job”, it is already being done, very effectively, by alternative information sources.  The internet, radio (short-wave and AM), independent publications and more.  They provide a gamut of more reliable, more diverse and MORE INTERESTING news than most newspapers do.  These alternative sources allow people to actually see all sides to the news without the inherent biases that many journalists in most newspapers (and their editorial boards) demonstrate.

To simplify for the *feeling* crowd.  If newspapers printed fair, balanced, unbiased news they would enjoy a renaissance.  Until the pool of politico-journalists is culled and returned to professionalism newspapers will continue to die off.
