Clarification of Concern over Gingrich Tea Party “partnering”

March 30, 2009 – 10:29 pm

The response to American Solutions‘ Adam Waldeck

Adam,

The impression was generated initially by this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vKr95e5aIE

His “partnering” with the “tax day tea party movement” to “develop a real protest” implies several things I find objectionable. The Tea Party movement isn’t solely run or organized by the people at Tax Day Tea Party. Further he implies that the efforts until now by real regular Americans (as exampled by the folks at American Freedom Network) haven’t been “real protests”.

The above was my impression, solicited by the author of the post I referenced in our earlier exchange.

The Tea Party movement is an extensive, non-partisan and very grass roots movement.  The “Tax Day Tea Party movement” mentioned is a relative late comer.  Welcome but certainly not wholly representative of the movement.  Sites and groupings working on Tea Parties abound nationwide.  Dates before and after tax day are planned. I was in Denver at one of the earliest and we have been promoting the movement as a whole for quite a period of time.  This is movement that must continue and not just be a “tax day” media event.  I will be at the April 15th event in my home town.

I recognize that the conclusions I drew and implications I saw in the video might not be an accurate representation.  That is why your correspondence is valuable to me.

Our concern as a group is with the direction of this country and support of the citizenry acting in its own interests.  We don’t claim ownership or leadership, only collaborative participation as our limited means permit.

Mr. Gingrich’s background in politics and the way he presented “his” invitation in the video are what caused my concern.  This was reinforced by the Greta V. quote that you previously explained.

Bottom line, for me, is that the movement be encouraged and supported.  By you, by Mr. Gingrich and any other freedom loving American.  Its strength is the real regular people participating in it.  Like it or not, association with political “players” can be an adverse impact to the credibility of the movement as a whole.

Our interest is in getting Americans to be more participatory in their own governance, less apathetic and to seek some new leadership, sprung less from the established political and media establishments.

I apologize for bordering on screed.  I appreciate your and your organization’s willingness to engage in discourse oriented towards what I believe are many common goals.  A return to actual Constitutional government can only be accomplished by a citizenry that actually sees and understands the current threats of the trend towards centralization and collectivization we are now experiencing.

I’m just a working schmo, who knows history, studies events and social trends and tries to impact his fellows in some small way.

  3. Nik: I would suggest that Newt’s “mis-statement” actually revealed what is in his heart — and that Newt is trying to become politically relevant again through the Tea Parties (I refer you back to my post, related to his White House aspirations). That statements are being released by American Solutions, consistent with what was posted in Instapundit, shows that we aren’t the only ones who think that Newt was inappropriately interjecting himself. If Newt would really like to work on the behalf on the American people, then his team should continue promoting the “Drill Here” campaign and note how the USA has just set aside millions of acres that can no longer be mined or otherwise developed for energy use.

  4. I love the idea of the TEA party. However, when you take the same old politicians Newt Gingrich and throw them in, you are now pressing their agenda. This turns from a grass-roots effort to another politician pushing his agenda. It becomes no different than a pork-filled spending bill. Keep religion and social issues out of this; otherwise, you will lose support and become another special interest group. The two issues that had nothing to do with taxes which was mentioned in the TEA site:
    1. appoint a defender of child pornography to the Number 2 position in the Justice Department?
    2. want to force doctors and other medical workers to perform abortions against their will?

Come on, really? Don’t you see that is just as hypocritical as anyone else. KEEP the damn religion and social issues out of this. Stop trying to press an agenda…otherwise there is no difference between you and them. TAXES folks, that is what we are talking about TAXES.

  5. It seems that they’ve forgotten we unwashed. Nik’s replies and the subsequent comments don’t feed their need for approbation.
They promised a “statement from their press Secretary”. We haven’t received such nor any comments from people associated with them. Kurt, Mut and the Mysterious EINSTEIN make good points
