The New Wefare State

The stimulus bill includes a provision requiring states that take the money to provide Unemployment Insurance(UI)  for laid-off part-time workers and for those who voluntarily quit their jobs.  Since UI taxes are 100% paid by the employer, this means that employer will be forced to support workers who just want to quit and take a paid vacation.  Of course, the language is couched in reasonable terms:  workers who must quit because of family emergencies, ‘domestic violence,’ and so forth.  Excuses, my drill sergeant used to say, are like certain orifices – everybody has them.  Instead of empowering people to not work if their life situation isn’t perfect, perhaps the rulers of this country should empower those who create work – businesspeople.
