Doomed to repeat it?

February 24, 2009 – 9:05 pm

Those who don’t learn from history ARE doomed to repeat it.  President Obama is speaking and lauding how government has “catalyzed” our economy during tough times.  This is patently and historically false.  He states that government action is the only way to avoid a recession that “could last a decade”.  Liberals love to compare this downturn to the Depression.  Economic statistics from that period demonstrate that massive government “programs” and “investments” did NOTHING to alleviate the economic problems.  In the 1960s LBJ proposed a massive “war on poverty” by implementing huge federal programs and bureaucracies and enormously increasing expenditures.  The poverty rate remained unchanged.  So now he is glibly and aggressively proposing socialization of our financial systems and our healthcare system.  This fantasy land of collectivistism has the Speaker of the House jumping like a cheerleader.  He is proposing “programs” that effectively federalize local schools.  Even more than Bush did.  He just said that “dropping out of high school is not an option”.  Of course he neglected to mention how that will happen but I agree with the sentiment.  He is “encouraging” volunteering by promising to pay for college.  If you get paid, is it volunteering?

The most fascinating thing to me is that virtually all he has proposed is unconstitutional.  More on that from our excellent writers later.

Now he is going to move on to the deficit.  He keeps talking about “the deficit we inhereted”.  That deficit was produced by the very congress-critters who are cheering the inane statement.  Oh yeah, the President, when a Senator voted for all those things too.  He then claims that the porkulus bill “had no earmarks”.  Who read the darned thing?  I bet he didn’t.  He is now describing gutting the military that has kept us safe and penalizing (controlling) businesses’ decisions on how to operate for profitability.  He again claims “tax cuts for 95% of working families”.  Many of that 95% of working families don’t pay ANY federal taxes.  So he is going to just give money to some people.  He is outlining a program to kill entrepenuership, destroy business and kill incentives for people to excel.  He wants to penalize people who make to much (in his mind) money.

He moves on to speak out of both sides of his mouth on national defense.  He has already promised to gut defense spending as part of his “deficit reduction”.  So he then promised to increase troop strength, troop pay and veterans benefits.  Some how I can’t get that math to work in my head.  He is promising “swift sure” justice for terrorists by closing the only place where that is happening in Cuba.  Now he is discussing how he plans to talk with evil regimes as if that will magically make them better.

All in all too many contradictions layered with irony, naivete and empty platitudes to comprehensively cover in a stream of consciousness blog.
