Consistently Disregarded Intellect

October 14, 2008 – 2:31 pm

Folks like Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins amongst many others are very strident about their views of people of faith, particularly Christian faith.

They do not hesitate to excoriate Christians and to ascribe most, if not all, that is wrong in the world to Christians and Christianity.

The most common tack is for the “anti” crowd to assert or imply (or both) lower levels of intellectual functioning to Christian believers.  I’m not sure if it is their own intellectual limitations or simply their need to feel *superior* to people of faith.

Secular humanist attackers of Christianity love to trot out examples of heinous acts committed (according to them) “in the name of God”.  They fail to note that the biggest industrial murderers of the world’s history were atheist/communists or other authoritarian anti-christians (see Nazis).

As they trumpet the poor mental functioning of Christians it is interesting to note some things.  First of all, faith is (or can be) part of a person’s whole in intellectual functioning.  University education was instituted by *gasp* Christians.  Some of the smartest folks around are Christians.

The point is that Christians don’t attack or need to attack those who denigrate them.  They’d rather write encouragement such as this.  Or provide inspiration and affirmation such as this.

The root is freedom however.  The freedom to choose or reject faith in God.  Christians are called (commissioned) to evangelize, witness and otherwise share their faith.  They aren’t called to attack, hate or otherwise be intolerant of others philosophy/worldview.  The exceptions that Christians take are to BEHAVIORS and not to the person.  “love the sinner and hate the sin”.  Christian faith provided a bedrock moral and ethical position submitted to by choice by the believer.  What similar anchor, other than what they decide themselves individually, provides any behavioral compass to those who’s only *faith* is in themselves?
